West Island School?

Hello,

I'd be grateful if you could help me with the following questions:

What type of work load could a child in Y8 expect? 2 hours of homework per night? Any on weekends?

Do the students readily accept new students or is it difficult to fit in?

Do you feel there are drug or alcohol problems?

Are the teachers very strict with behaviour?

Are the students able to choose electives?

Do the students stay with the same peer group during all of their classes?

Are the students grouped according to their abilities?

Are the students very active socially?

Do the kids like their teachers without feeling intimidated by them? Do students find the work interesting and challenging without having to spend their entire life including weekends studying?

I'm told there is a large Asian population. Would a visibly Western (Caucasian) child be readily accepted and comfortable?

We are considering HKIS or WIS. Any advice would be appreciated. We could move to go to South Island School, but I don't know if there is much of a difference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We don't know where we will live or where we will send our child for university, but I like the IB program of the ESF schools or the AP at HKIS, but I don't know much about it.

Thanks again.

Hi Notyou,

My son an Y8 student in WIS. He LOVED his school and literally ran to school. We moved back to the U.S. 7 months ago and he stays in contact with his friends.

Answers to your questions:

--WIS has dynastys to group kids together all year

--Perhaps, but I didn't notice much in the early years

--Not very strick in my view, but my son claims WIS is much, mcuh stricter than his current U.S. school

--not lower years students

--yes, they stay with their dynasty all thru graduation

--they offer advanced math and language classes

--students seem very social at least with the case of my son. he was invited to plenty of parties

--i don't know if he was intimidated by teachers. From my prospective, the teachers seem down to earth, caring and know my son by name. i wish the parent/teacher conference could be more often. I did email the teachers with my concerns and got replies most of the time

--like I said, my y8 child loved his studies. he's friends are like the U.N. Really, I couldn't tell any obvious racial tensions. Yes, there will be kids saying silly remarks. I always encoruaged him to bring his friends home so I could make sure they offered positive influences.

--so you can tell we had quite a good experencie with WIS. good luck!
