Hi there
I know some Cantonese (speaking only) but wish to dedicate myself to learning Mandarin. I have no experience there. Cannot afford private lesson and group lessons are not easy with motherhood and job.
Unfortunately I cannot seem to find review about galore of CD/DVD/Audio books methods available in store.
1. Do you have any success and failure to share about learning materials out there?
2. Is there any good English-to-Chinese dictionary so I could prepare some sentences daily before trying them out in the streets?
3. Did any of you started learning with their kids?
Any suggestion, feedback most appreciated

Best to find some Mandarin native speakers who want to do language exchange for English. You may also watch ATV English channel in the morning (around 9am or 9:30am, I can't remember exactly when). There's a Canadian guy teaching Mandarin - it's a CCTV program so the host is well qualified!

You can try the http://chinesepod.com/ online for an excellent resource. A small payment for advanced downloads (texts, etc), but the free stuff is excellent and comprehensive. Up-to-date spoken Mandarin.

Best way to learn Mandarin is to live on the Mainland or in Taiwan for a while. Go to a second-tier city, where English won't be as easy to come across, and make it a point to do everything in Mandarin.
You could do the same here (I can speak Cantonese now, but I did everything in Mandarin when I first came to Hong Kong), but it's not nearly as easy, especially if you don't live in Kowloon or NT.
