Hi

My son is 5 and i cant get him into Primary 1. I had applied for the ESF schools last year September, but missed the interview (Job problems had to move out of HK) as a result he did not get in...we moved back in May but they say they have a long wait list now...and they wont let us go to another school out of our catchment area. I tried a couple of independent schools, same story...dont know what to do...we have moved to HK from UK so prefer an English curriculum school. very worried..

You should get on the waiting list for the ESF anyway, if that's where you want him to go, they always say it's a long list - and indeed year 1 this year was heavily subscribed. But you never know how things will pan out... people come and go all the time. I met a family last week who got here too late this time last year to get in the ESF, they went on the waiting list & put the girls in Yew Chung (?) - found it a culture shock but stayed for a year & got great Mandarin, then finally got into the nearest ESF school this month.

My wife is the principal of The Harbour School, a small (about 65 kids) nonprofit fully EDB registered school operated as a charity and located in Kennedy Town. It offers classes for K through P6 students. The reason I bring it to your attention is that The Harbour School still has placements available.

Although not a "special needs" school, The Harbour School does work with each child individually whatever their learning needs. In addition, the Harbour School's "sister" charity, The Children's Institute of Hong Kong, works exclusively with children on the autistic spectrum and, whenever possible, provides mainstream experiences for these kids in The Harbour School classrooms.

If you are still looking for a place for your child, consider calling The Harbour School and arranging a visit.

You should try Private Teachers See listing in A-Z >Education> Tuition Services They take kids waiting for ESF places and give them 1 on 1 instruction so they don't fall behind

This school is a designated school for Non Chinese Speaking students. They follow the local curriculum with a slightly adjusted Chinese program (to make it easier). Chinese is taught in Cantonese and all other subjects are taught in English - by local teachers who themselves use English as a second language.

It has a nice feel to it (it's small) and their students do graduate onto some of the top schools.

HTH!
