As usual, Cara nails it - there are people who will tell you X or Y has the best reputation, but does that mean it's the best fit for your family? I say family cos they all have different expectations of parental involvement. Visit as many as you can & get a feel for them....

For ESF, it all depends on where you live. They divided Hong Kong into deifferent districts and students are not supposed to cross the border.
You can visit their website www.esf.edu.hk for further details.
By the way, I am not saying ESF is the best.

American International School on Waterloo. It's not supposed to be that great though. Delia in Kowloon and Hung Hom (latter is KG), and a few bilingual schools as well.

Its difficult to generalise and say that the curiculum in this school is better than that.
I went to HKIS, QBS and SIS (all HK Island) many years ago.
Now I think about it my parents did a good thing to get me out of HKIS.
My opinion:
Stay away from rich kid schools - stick to the mainstream....meaning ESF

Interesting, lalib- UK friend & her brother, after living in the USA, came here - 1980s- had been in US system so the parents put them in HKIS - brother loved it, sister hated it & was much happier in ESF. Each to their own I guess...

Don't forget the debenture. Some school like ICS are almost $200K, and others more....i know that definately factors into the choice for a lot of us.

All the abve posters are correct. You need a school that's right for your family. I'm an Aussie and have my kids in the Australian International School and both myself and the kids LOVE it. But it's right for us, if you're from the US then you probably wouldn't like it so much as the fit wouldn't be right. Just start doing some research and go and visit the schools that make your shortlist is my advice.

We've been on island for 3 weeks. Considering moving to Discovery Bay for varied reasons. We know it's not the true HK living experience. One of our children has been offered a space at Discovery College with our younger child on the wait list. We have friends with children at HKIS, HKA and Canadian International (heard the best for academics, true?). I've read some not so flattering posts about Discovery College. Anyone care to elaborate? We are from the US (Hawaii) where our children have been atttending private school (IB curriculum and a parochial school) for several years. We understand school is a very personal thing, but we are having trouble interpreting true information about the different schools from their websites. The other issue is we are wanting to get our kids back in school as soon as possible, but not at the risk of making them change schools again in the fall or next year. Trial and error is not an option as this will be the third school in the last two years for one of our kids. By reading the posts, there appears to be an even mix of likes and dislikes about any/all schools. But we are focusing on Discovery College now and would appreciate specific, first-hand comments. Thanks.

Cara, I know people who have lived here for 30 years plus and still cannot utter a single word of Cantonese and have by their own admission led a very introverted, xpat type of existence - they have not experienced the real HK.

I know this is about intl schools but if your child is young enough - ie first year of primary school - why not consider a local school? To start with, your kid will be fluent in Cantonese in about 6 months and will develop a good work ethic. It's also a lot cheaper and, if you stay in the longer term, your child will be able to adapt much better and will probably have better job opportunities both in HK/China and the West. Of course, after Year one primary, the locals kids will have learnt so many Chinese characters it probably wouldn't be possible for your kid to catch up.
