Help: Book for teaching English?

ORIGINAL POST

I volunteer for a charity and because I am the only native-English speaker in the fundraising committee, I was thinking of offering my services to teach local people English.

Can anyone recommend any easy books to follow so that I can give adequate English lessons, to provide people with day-to-day usage of English? A book that would lay out what I could teach each lesson?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I guess we would target mature-aged people, with limited English skills.

I have no teaching experience. I'm hoping there would be a single book out there that could lay out lessons... and any advice from people on how a complete novice could approach this?

I have absolutely no idea where to start!

Thanks, Cara.

I remember when I first learnt Cantonese, you do ten lessons as beginner and can start learning phrases etc. I wonder if I can achieve the same thing within ten lessons also. I'm hoping to be able to teach counting, days of the week, how to introduce yourself, various conversational day-to-day stuff.

Thank you - I appreciate all the advice I can get. I want to be able to help this charity, but sometimes I wonder if I'm being too ambitious. It's not like I'm going to be running a school but possibly short courses for beginning English. And I wouldn't even know where to start with teaching grammar!

I hope I can find some simple book to follow!

You should check out A& P Campus Bookstore, in Jordan on Austin Road...thousands of titles in ELT.

Sorry can't think of a book right now that can help in this. But first, set a learning outcome that is achievable for the learners. If they are a mixed bag from 20 y/o to 60's it will be more difficult. For example for 40's and over, you might just say "to be able to use basic oral English to handle day to day activities" and forget all about hammering the grammar, you can point out grammar but it's not necessary for them to be perfect in grammar to communicate for this learning outcome.

I would agree to start with easy vocabulary and common expressions and working towards themes. Shopping, restaurant, travel..etc. I hope they are motivated learners, if not you'll need to work even harder. Good luck.
