NZ School - ACG Parnell College

Has anyone sent their children to the primary school at ACG Parnell College in New Zealand? Or know about the quality of the school?

I am an Australian living in HK and will be moving to NZ early next year. I would be very grateful for any opinions about the school as I only know what is on their website. If my son is accepted to attend ACG (I have not applied yet) he will start in Year 1 in January 2012. He is completing Reception at an international school in HK this academic year.

Also, do you know what the student teacher ratio is?

Would the drive from Parnell to the airport to hellish? My work will be based near the airport. I don't know about NZ traffic either !

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in anticipation,

Nancy 8

Hi,

I am from NZ and have not sent any kids to ACG but use to work near it. I personaly consider it would be better than any other of the schools in the zone. It is quite affleunt as the zoning is Parnell, Remuera & Epsom where the well off families live in Auckland.

The drive from Parnell to Airport during peak (which starts after school 3ish pm onwards) would take between 45 to 55 mins. I consider Auckland peak traffic is similar to HK and Sydney.

Hi kfcboy (cool name by the way),

Thank you for your email.

Do you also know anything about St Cuthberts College as I have a daughter of primary school age too. I realize it is a girls' school and would welcome any comments that you can make about the school.

Best regards,

Nancy8.

St Cuths is one of the more highly regarded schools in Auckland, it would be a safe bet. What area are you living in? Most primary schools in central Auckland are good schools to be honest so most people try to send their kids somewhere close to home

Hi Tedtotaler

Thanks for your input. We don't have a place in NZ yet and tend to rent. I will be working close to the airport so a good school not too far away from the airport is what we are looking for. The St Cuthert's website says the school is only 20 mins from the airport so that sounds good if that is accurate. I have also seen the website for the Diocesan school for girls... Have you heard anything about that one?

Do you also know of a good primary school for boys in a similar area neat St cuthberts?

Thanks again,

Nancy8

Nancy8,

I would have to agree with Tedtotaler that most primary schools in central Auckland are pretty good. St Cuthberts is very good again, Epsom Normal Primary for your son is just down the road from St Cuthberts. 20mins from St Cuthberts to airport is offpeak! Double the travel time during peak. If you are going to send your kids to those schools or nearby and work nearby the airport I recommend you look to rent in Epsom somewhere of Manukau and Pah Roads but north of Selwyn Road as that is cut of zone for public Epsom schools.

By the way Pah road takes you directly to the motorway to the airport.

Hi kfcboy,

Thank you for this valuable information. Local knowledge is a fabulous thing!

If you have children at school in HK, have you found much difference between schooling here and in NZ?

Nancy8,

I would say the key difference is that NZ is less competitive than HK but your childern will have better allround skills and social skills. NZ is similar to OZ. Key point is high school in NZ better to send kids to private e.g St Cuths.

Did a visit to Strathallen in Karaka AKL when we were home in March. This is an amazing private school. Just off the Papakura off ramp. We have considered sending our daughter there next year and have my husband commute from HK. We noticed other Cathay families sending there kids there aswel. I have also heard that ST Cuthberts is very nice also, we have friends with 3 daughters that are considering the same option we are and sending there 3 daughters to St Cuthberts.
