Hi,

We have a young daughter and are looking into what sort of school options are available. My wife is korean and I am from Fiji so english and korean is spoken at home. However as we plan to stay in HK for quite a while we were thinking it would be quite useful for her to be immersed into a chinese speaking environment ideally mandarin.

Having said that would anyone be able to shed some light on their experiences on any good mandarin speaking Kindergartens and Primary and secondary school. Neither my wife nor I speak Mandarin so ability to help with homework and practice is limited etc

We have heard, and it makes sense, that the language spoken on the playground is quite influential on how kids pick up languages etc.

I am sure there are people out there has their kids in a mandarin speaking school or dual language that they are happy with and we would appreciate your insight.

Many thanks

This school in North Point has two sections. The local section use Mandarin as teaching language. It is a popular school and not easy to get into.

mmdr3721's suggestion is one of the most popular = difficult to get a place.

I'd certainly ask you to reconsider your choice of Mandarin in the very early stage - kindergartens offering strong programs in both Mandarin and English and limited, and primary schools even more so. Would you consider Cantonese where you have far more choice.

If you're set on Mandarin/English, a few you may consider are KCS, Victoria, IMS, Rightmind, Tutor Time and Discovery Montessori.

Thanks hkwaffle

I have looked into KCS and Victoria and DM. What would be my choices if we were looking at Cantonese/English

Victoria kindy without a doubt! We are similar situation family, with no chinese spoken in our household. My child has been 1.5 yrs at Victoria in mandarin/english stream, and now almost speaks fluent mandarin, loves it and we are kept fully informed as english teacher will help with questions / queries. Also children at this age just get on with it and speak the language. My child also has picked up cantonese from kids at school but mainly from the kids he plays with in the local playground. I'm so pleased we made this choice of school and applaud the teachers for their efforts. My child has been so lucky to have an excellent mandarin teacher in both K1 and K2. They get a small bit of homework and you may need a tutor for 1 hour per week to help out with homework, but I find it quite fun to help out and my child often corrects me if i get it wrong:)-

Excellent school that doesn't look for popularity, but instead, the actual education and knowledge. Attended my nephew's kindergarten graduation, they had two K1 students making speeches in both Mandarin and English.
