Preschool recommendations

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,

We arrived in Hong Kong just 4weeks ago and have started the process of finding my 3 yr old boy a preschool.

I'm hoping to get him in a morning session but am struggling to find something.

My preference is not Montessori however I'm getting to the point where I can't be fussy.

I have found him 1 place at woodlands but the fees are high for just 3 hours a day.

Can anyone recommend a preschool that provides a great learning environment, access to play equipment, good teachers (pref with a mandarin component)?

We live in Kennedy road border of Wanchai and Mid-Levels.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

Cheers

If you put him in a local school, he will be fluent in Chinese in about 6 months. They also start teaching Chinse characters at that age. Also very cheap. I'm English and I have put my kids through local schools. The discipline is strong and the kids have to work a lot though.

Try Mui Wo OWLS School. Phone Dorothy at 29840006. Its a small school but they may still have places.

Why don't you try Sunshine House Int'l Pre-school? They offer Mandarin immersion and the school has a very good reputation. My children went to their Taitam Branch and they love it.

OWLS is too far from you and The British Council don't have a preschool yet. Planned for 2014.

As LGIMV suggested, a "local" kindergarten will not only be cheaper [some are almost nothing if you have a pre-primary voucher] but your son will also learn Cantonese, which opens up your options for primary schools. If you think finding a preschool is tough, just wait till you're looking for a primary school!

Try Starters on QRE, Baby Buddies in Causeway Bay.

Whatever the immediate outcome, keep in mind that a timely application is one submitted a year in advance so you may like to think forward to Sept 2014. Some primary schools will accept children as young as 3 (which you've missed) and 4 (which you'll need to apply for soon).

Hope this helps.

Did you checkout Starters? My son has been attending over a year. No mandarin though -- but the teachers are wonderful. They have been around forever but they don't advertise. I also live on kennedy rd and walk my son to school. It's across Pacific Place 3. Also, very reasonable fees.

Small World Christian Kindergaten is very close to you and is a completely wonderful little school. It is gentle, nurturing and provides real quality early education programme and is much cheaper than Woodlands (and for the life of me I can't work out why given how good it is!!!). Small World also has the benefit of priority entry to it's primary school (Island Christian Academy) which in these days of uber-competitive International schoool P1 places is something worth having!!! I also had experience of the playgroup at City Kids also on Borrett road which is also lovely, haven't got personal experience of the pre-school but by all accounts it is also great....good luck .

Not sure if you have found anything yet. There is a place in Prince Edward called Kids Channel could be right up your alley.

Starts at Toddlers and goes up to Primary.

Alison's Letter in Causeway Bay is fantastic. The Building and location may not seem appealing but the educational ideas, philosophy of the school and teachers are fantastic and this is coming from a Mum who is a Primary school teacher here in HK.

There is a new international kindergarten soon to open up in Hong Kong. Check out the EtonHouse website. Sounds like a really good pre-school!! Good luck.
