Hello..

I would like to ask for help about my baby...

She is going to attend kindergarten 1 this school year, however bilingual classes are full already, so i just enrolled her in a chinese class.. I am confused, primarily because my baby is not speaking any chinese word, nor she is a chinese national. I am a filipino and my husband is a filipino as well, so we dont speak chinese, my baby can only speak english. Is it possible for her to be in chinese class even though she dont speak chinese? Can she easily learn chinese language? Do i need to hire a tutor instead?

I hope someone could help me.. Thanks...

If both parents cannot speak Mandarin, hiring a tutor to help is a good idea. In addtion, I recommend the "qiaohu" series video (u can search qiaohu from youtube). The video is very interesting and can attract kid's attention to learn Mandarin.

I have been a Mandarin tutor to babies and kids and would like to share some tips:

1. Talk - Talk as much and as often as you can to them. When s/he is interested in something, such as "ball", "pen", "dog", "apple", speak clearly to them. When they follow what u say, give them clear feedback, e.g. "yes", "good", "well done".

2. Read story books - A lot of books can be borrowed from the public library. Use songs and facial expression when read story books so as to attract them for longer time and more opportunity to learn.

3. Play games - A lot of communication and interactions can be involved through playing games.

4. Watch video clips - I recommend "巧虎" series. Babies/Kids can learn words and expressions e.g. Head, Shoulders, Washing hands, fly, eat, easily after watching the video clips quickly.

My wife is filipina and i am British. Our son went to a Chinese kindie. He loved it! He didn't mind learning canto. He is now P4 in a Chinese school. Fluent in Canto! Reading and writing are not good, but who cares! All the best!
