Hong Kong's prestigious international schools are becoing flooded with the offspring of mainland China's elite, reports the Beijing-based Caixin Media.

Instead of sending their children overseas to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia, China's wealthy are turning to bilingual international schools in Hong Kong which teach in both English and Mandarin and are generally cheaper than international schools on the mainland. Most importantly, the close proximity is something schools in the West cannot offer.

In contrast to mainland international schools, which only accept students with foreign passports, Hong Kong's international schools can admit up to a certain percentage of children from mainland families. The previously established limit for mainland Chinese students was 30%, though many are said to have shown flexibility in enforcing the quota.

As a result, the number of international schools in Hong Kong has reportedly increased from 92 to 171 since 2000, with the total number of students nearly doubling from 34,000 to 66,000.
