Looking for a Cantonese instructor for myself since I have to work in Hong Kong for 3 years.
Is it difficult to learn? In what ways can I find a place to learn?

Cantonese can be a real challenge to learn if you are a foreigner.
- It is only a spoken language
- Limited written material is available for foreign learners
- Most local people will not expect (and in some cases, want) you to learn
- It is easy to live in HK speaking English
On the positive side
- It is an old and interesting language to learn
- It is quite playful
- It will help you understand many aspects of the local culture and way of thinking
- Making the effort will get you a lot of social praise by locals
If you want to learn, you can kick-start your learning in HK via the Hong Kong programme for ethnic minorities that offers free or almost-free group Cantonese classes via a number of charities (Caritas, ISS, etc.).
A personal teacher will of course be more efficient (yet much more expensive)
Previous knowledge of another Asian language (especially Standard Chinese/Mandarin, or to a lesser extent Japanese) can help.
In all cases expect to spend a lot of time. The grammar is not too complicated. No need to be too afraid of complications such as tones and counters, nobody will care if you are a foreigner... At the end it is all about vocabulary, vocabulary, vocabulary, that only practice can help you get. The corpus is *very* different from that of Western languages and for years you will always have a choice of two or more words when you have an idea in mind that you want to convey.

I have done 4 lessons in a language center located at Wan Chai.
The course is practical and the pace is efficient.

Hi, in addition to the course, what might be more important is the language environment. I am looking for naive English exposure for my kid, may be we can work together. Send me msg if interested we can work it out.

Its a repeat of Mars2012 post and from my own personal expereince of daily life in Hong Kong. My Cantonese and written Chinese is not perfect but its good enough to under conversations around me and to read Chinese (with the help of a dictionary for more difficult characters). AND still everyday I will get people trying to reply to me English.
So if want to learn which i really hope you will cause its such an interesting language you need to be very stuborn and quite forceful. .
Not only Canto useful in daily life but it will open up a lot more that HK offers like educational and training courses.
