MBA or no MBA?

ORIGINAL POST

I'm 32, have worked in the same company for ten years, and have a decent middle management position. Yet, I'm getting bored. So I decided to apply for MBA programs starting in the Fall of 2009. I reason that 2 years from now I can come out and demand a higher salary in a more stimulating position.

Some of my friends tell me I'm crazy for quitting work and depleting my savings in this economy.

They got me thinking - is going for an MBA now a stupid idea?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

can you take a part-time program?

thou i believe MBA is important, 2-year full time study is a bit wasting of time.

Thanks, C.Y.

Actually, the program is HKUST's standard full time program - which is 1.5 years. I was talking about two years from now as I would enter in the Fall, and then graduate 1.5 years later.

Given the starting salaries coming out of HKUST, it would seem like a worthwhile investment. Plus, the economy (hopefully) will be on the road to recovery by then.

Seems you are taking the same view as my friends regarding the value of an MBA?

I did my MBA overseas and I think it's the best professional move of my life. It depends on what you want to achieve out of the MBA, is it a career change, a sector change, higher salary, etc?

You can do part-time but it will never be the same experience as a full-time MBA. There are shorter programs around 12 months (Insead, IMD, Cambridge, Oxford, etc) if the length of program is an issue. My only advice is to choose a program best aligned to your career goals (for eg. one that is most recognisable in your industry) and choose a school that is excellent in their career placement service.
