Cantonese Lessons

I'm yet another person looking for Cantonese lessons. Would ideally like someone who can focus on functional / conversational aspects. Not interested in language exchange / part time tutors. Ideally, I would like someone with experience teaching gweilos, and some references from the same.

Or, if there's someone you could refer, that would also be great.

Thanks in advance!

Chris Chen. Plenty of experience teaching Gweilos. I found him to be able to adapt his approach to my personality quite well. 6573 1818.

I did one year (3 courses) at the YMCA in TST. The classes meet once per week for 2 hours and it was quite fun. After a year, I had enough basis to speak and understand some basics. They use the Yale system, books from CUHK, which I quite like. Also, listening to RTHK podcast is helpful once you have a few basics (I realize a lot of people disagree with that show, but I find it fun and usable).

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I will definitely be following up on a few of them.

Unfortunately, I travel frequently and sometimes unpredictably for work--that makes any kind of an organized / scheduled class a complete non-starter for me. By the same token, my time is too limited to spend it on a one-size-fits all Berlitz-type course. I really need a private instructor who can tailor sometime to my needs and accommodate an occasionally erratic scheduled.

If anyone has further suggestions in that vein, they'd be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

This topic has ben raised many times, once by me looking for childs Cantonese tutors. The facilities I found including the big name schools are poor and too formal. We have now taken the view that Cantonese is a dying language anyway and concentrated on Mandarin.

Hi Alex, since you travel frequently, I think bringing a fine learning tool with you everywhere can be a good choice. You may find HNHSoft Cantonese phrasebook helpful: www.hnhsoft.com. It focuses on teaching practical things. Good luck!

I am still looking for a Cantonese tutor, a place to practice my rusty Cantonese or an English/Cantonese exchange. Any ideas or recommendations of a good teacher or exchange partner would be helpful.
