Hi, I am new in Hong Kong and I observed their education system is quite different to my hometown. Back home we had K1, K2, K3 followed by primary school. However in HK many schools have PGI, PNI, PLI and PUI. Can someone elaborate and explain about it. How do I know which class my kid should go to.

R1 is reception 1 for 4 or 5 year olds. Most go to Years or grades after that. Please ask the school itself.

100% with Cara. Here we do say K1, K2, K3 then Primary 1 and dont know what you are referring to. Some internationals schools or the ESF system accept children from K3. But as notyou suggested, it is better to check with the schoo for age requirements etc.

generallly with the local system
Pre nursery (PN) is for children 2 years old
K1 also called Nursery for children 2 years and 8 months
K2 also called Lower Kindergarten for children 3 years and 8 months
k3 also called Upper kindergarten for children 4 years and 8 months
afterwards most would attend primary 1-6 and so forth.
somechidlren attending the international sections will only attend up to K2 and then attend the school's Reception class or as ESF would have it they would be in P1 whcih is equivolant to K3 in teh kindergarten.
but i haven't heard of the codes u are referring to.
