My son will be starting K1 at an international kindergarten this year. I just realised that this school expects parents to drop off the kids and leave right from day 1. I know there are schools where parents can spend some time with the child in the classroom at least on the first day and that for the first week they have just an hour of school.
What's the usual practice?

K1 is which age?
Sorry, so many different ways to call grades that I wanted to clarify as I think schools have different approaches and expectations from children accordingly to age range.

You're right, each school seems have a slightly different classification.
The class my son will be in has children from 2.8 to 3.5 years.

Okie, that's a young age and I know moms are worried. For my daughter and son, I was allowed to stay with them for the full session the first day and for the 2nd and 3rd, I was on wait on campus in case.
I really don't know the normality of the transition period but, I do know, each school/each teacher have their own way. If you feel uncomfortable with this, talk to the teacher! I find this the key, right now, you might be worried about the transition but, you will need to ask the teachers for the "correct info," sooner or later!!!
Also, kids, when they are thrown in the situation, it's amazing how they get on with life! I completely understand your concern but, try giving your child more credit! That's what I learnt from my kids! I often find that it's me that has more anxiety than them! ( I'm the one telling them I'll miss you!!!)
Good luck!

Thanks for replying. Actually, I already asked the school for the correct information and that's why I posted this question - because it differed from my expectations. As your response indicates, there are schools that allow parents to be there for a good length of time initially. After asking around, I can see there is a wide variation of practice; wish my son's school had a gentler approach to the first week of school and that I had thought to ask this question before I enrolled him.
I would love to believe my kids would just get on with life, but from experience I know they won't. Oh well.
