Except for a mis-pronunciation by the pronouncer (I correctly spelled what she said, “immerge”, when she meant to say “emerge”), I would have competed as one of 100 finalists in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. I did make it to the final round of only five competitors in Impromptu and Extemporaneous Speaking comptetition, for the entire Southwestern USA (from Texas to California, inclusive). I worked with the Kaplan organization for almost 9 years, and with The Princeton Review for 4 years. I have done professional copywriting and proofreading for a Los Angeles-based publisher. She said she sent me her toughest authors because they would accept only my suggestions as correct, but would challenge other proofreaders. I started out as a teaching assistant at the Claremont Colleges in California, where I was trained in TEFL/TOEFL, and in various methods of foreign-language learning, including the Dartmouth method.
