Hi All,

My daughter goes to CAIS currently and we have an offer from Lantau International School in P2. I would really really appreciate if someone can give feedback on the school, especially the parents with kids going to LIS.

We live in Tung chung and LIS will reduce the travel time significantly but need some info. on the academics and also if they are supportive about the kids needing special attention. (obviously the school building is something that makes me think again )

We have to decide in a day and hence would really appreciate your help!

thanks a lot!

As a manager of LIS, I am flabbergasted by some baseless comments on the school. To clarify a few points, let me first say that LIS is not housed in a shack.

The school is located in three different locations on the South shore of Lantau. One campus is in Mui Wo (full-time reception class). The Mui Wo campus is about 1,300sqft for 30 children maximum. It was completely renovated in 2010. LIS is currently negotiating with the government to move this campus to a former village school at Cheung Sha. The second campus (P1/P3) in the village of Tong Fuk is 12,000sqft for about 120 children. This comes to about 100sqft per pupil. It is a higher space ratio that most of the international schools of Hong Kong. Classrooms are in three different buildings : one is the former village school built in 1975 by the government, which was totally refurbished in 2001. Another is a prefabricated building imported from UK in 1998, one is a 700sqft floor renovated in 2004. The third campus (P4/P6) is in Pui O. It is about 9,000sqft for about 120 students. The building was rebuilt in 2008. Priority has been given to the classrooms, which are spacious and clear.

All our teachers are highly qualified and experienced in teaching the British Curriculum. The level is assessed by the SATS examination system from UK. To give just an example, the academic standard of LIS is far higher than the standard of any school in Canada, which raises issue when children are coming from this country to join the school. LIS caters currently for seventeen nationalities, the common denominator between the pupils being the use of the English language.

Six classrooms are equipped with Activboards. Wireless is available in each classroom and each pupil is provided with a laptop for IT lessons. By 2015 all classrooms will have Activboards.

Unusual for Hong Kong, PE lessons can either be on a football pitch, or on the beach as all campuses are 5 minutes away from beaches. The unusual nature of the school

If it is so wonderful why is everyone leaving LIS, the first chance they get?

I wonder where you get this information. The school has currently 260 pupils and a waiting list of about 50. Parents are already registering for 2015. Keep in mind that the intake of pupils from DB is about one third of the capacity of the school. We perfectly understand that parents living in DB might choose a school close to their place. It dos not mean that LIS does not have a good reputation. Every year, we have only 5 or 6 children leaving the school for relocation to another school in HK. It certainly does not reflect the life of LIS.

This is only the end of my comment from 4 days ago. It had been cut in the middle...

The unusual nature of the school compared to high-rise buildings may surprise those who are not familiar with the coutryside of Hong Kong, but to call a shack a low-rise building is a bit far-fetched. Furthermore parents should keep in mind that all buildings are licensed by the Hong Kong government and that the standards to license a classroom are pretty strict.

LIS has been operating since 1995 to the delights of hundreds of children and parents, who only regretted that we did not set up a secondary school on South Lantau.

To conclude and to address another comment, yes, LIS has running water and all the classrooms are fitted with split-unit A/Cs.
