It depends on what designation you have been shorlisted for? Professor, Associate Pro, Assistant Pro, Teaching Fellows, Lecturer etc. It does depend on your experience and qualifications. I know friends who do earn more part timing. You also get more flexibility and no office politics.

I agree with you there is no security in part timing. I guess it depends on the uni you are working for - I think some Uni pay a little better others although lecturers might earn between 30-38k a month

You should be able to get about that. Bear in mind though that some evening teaching is required although I am sure it will not be as bad as 6 evenings. I agree with you though on the publication and being sposored for conferences. Good luck!! Hope you get it. Will u let us know??

The local universities are very inflexible when it comes to salary, and negotiation is often not possible. Most staff are rated with a certain amount of "points" according to their qualifications and experience. These points are then converted into a monthly salary. The $ value of the points changes according to the economy every now and then - it is kinda like shares. I would be surprised if the salary for a lecturer is more than 30k. I know an assistant professor who gets only 34k.

I definitely agree with Zelda. It is all a matter of guangxi and office politics. If you are good at teaching they will just give you more teaching hours but you will never get promoted. Those who are promoted and those who receive privileges are those who either work for the professors or who agree with everything they do. For these people the sky is the limit - with even research funding being constantly approved!!!

Zelda,
Depending on the uni, you can expect an offer of between 45,000 and 55,000HKD a month as an Asst. Prof/Lecturer rank, based on years in rank and experience. You may also receive a housing benefit (highly dependent on the uni) as well as good medical (including dental) and leave benefits. 35,000HKD sounds very low to me - but that could be a matter of the uni involved. I work at one of the top unis in HK and the pay/conditions are quite good. I think it all depends on the uni and your department.
Best of luck!
