My maid of 7 weeks has asked me for a copy of her wage receipt. I have been paying her by cash cheque. With my old maid, she would just sign off upon receiving payment and never requested a copy of her acknowledgment slips. I thought the reason for the maid to acknowledge payment is to evident such payments have been made and received should a dispute arises. So am I supposed to give her copies of her signed receipts?

The first time I paid her, she never requested a copy. It was only with the recent payment she asked for a copy. She has been pestering me for a copy and when I've asked her why she needed it, she wouldn't tell me saying she just wants it. Even today, when I returned from my afternoon outing, the first thing she asked as soon as I stepped through the front door was her copy of her wage receipt. My wage receipt is a computer printout based on the sample provided in the FDH guide but without the "witness part". I've spoken to some of my friends and their maids never ask for copies nor do they give out copies. Their maids are more interested in receiving their wages at the end of the month.

I reckon she's new? It's part of the pre-departure seminar a helper must attend to prior to working overseas. In fact, we were advised to ask for a receipt for every gifts our employers may give us. Yes it sounds silly but it is on the premise that... an employer , in altercation might report it/them as stolen. It may sopund silly, but for women ...many of whom don't even know what a vacuum cleaner looks like, that sounds prudent.
Yes, she ( or anyone ) should have one if she want it. Especially if the actual pay is different from what is in the contract. ( just like ours, but we have payslips)
