Hi,

We have just employed our first DH and I am confused about who psys for what. My husband has been told that we should take the money we paid for such things as agency fees, training levy (to govt), medicals and insurance out of our DH's salary. Is this correct?? Can someone tell me what is usually done here and basically who pays for what.

Thanks

I don't think that is correct (or fair/legal?)

Definitely not correct those things are employers responsibility both legally and morally. The DH pays for none of these things sammy s.

As an employer you must take out (and pay) for her employee compensation insurance and medical insurance. This is a legal requirement and can range from 600 to 1400 per year depending on coverage.

The agency fees, training levy etc are also the ewmployees responsibility to pay for.

You must also either allow the helper to eat with your family or provide a food allowance. You must also provide for her basic living requirements such as toilet paper, soap etc. We allow our helper to use most of everything in the house as she has an important role in our household and we want her to feel comfortable and part of our household, but that is just what we do. You need to find what works for you.

There is really nothing you can deduct from her salary unless she directly owes you the money, ie. she has taken an advance, or a loan. It is a small amount of money they are paid so it is terribly unfair ot try and reduce it further.

There is a good guide on the web that you should read so you can know your legal responsibilities. http://www.labour.gov.hk/eng/public/wcp/FDHguide.pdf

A few searches on this website will also clue you up fairly quickly.

OK. Thanks everyone. Will definitely take a look at these links.

We do want our helper to enjoy (as much as possible) living with us. She does eat with us and we have made her room as nice an comfortable as we can with all new furniture. Did we sound cruel?? Didn't mean to. Just was confused and wanted clarification.
