Hi -moving to HK next month and want to employ a

full time live-in helper.

Would I be best going through an agency ? do they

do all the paperwork.

I do not have a clue what I am meant to do when I employ her so any informaton or website referrals

would be greatly appreciated.

The paper work is very simple - your helper will likely be able to handle all of this for you. Save some cash and hire without an agency http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/helpers/

If you require agency assistance please call Evelyn in our office - she charges employers HKD2000 and the helper pays nothing if she places them 2815 2520

As Ed says it is not rocket science. Helpers who have been around for a while have a good handle on the procedures. Good agencies are nice though, since you don't have to do "anything" except fill in a few forms and pay the money.

I would focus on finding good candidate. The red tape is not a big hurdle.

Note that immigration handling will take 6-10 weeks.

Hi

With immigration taking 6-10 weeks does that mean she cant start with me and

I have to wait that length of time ?

I think it takes 6-10 weeks for an overseas hire but for those who have finished their contract, I think they can start immediately.

Correct. She cannot start. You can however get a (legal) part time while you wait.

Not quite. Those who have finished their contract take less time to process but they still have to leave HK (for example going to Macau) for a certain period. And immigration paperwork still needs to be done. Can't remember how much shorter the times are.

You can interview at once. Sundays are best since most helpers are off on Sundays. You should make an quick decision since the good ones get snapped up fast. Before you leave the agency even.

As mentioned this doesn't decrease visa processing time.

A visa usually takes a minimum of 4 weeks, and thats for a fast one, Normally at least 6 weeks. You really need to allow yourself 2 months from finding a helper to them arriving to work for you, at least..
