IF you could have a mainland DH, would you chose them above other nationalities?

A recent story in the Malasian Insider said the HK government is looking at allowing mainland DH to come and work in HK. But they have many concerns about how to handle the contracts to prevent men from bringing in their mainland "wives" and also to fight organized crime.

Here is my question:

If you could choose to hire a mainland DH and not worry about culture, language etc, would you change?

BTW, I do NOT intend this to become a racist rant, just give your opinion please! Thanks

Our hiring criteria are always based on the person, not the nationality. If the DH is good for us, her nationality is irrelevant.

I am sure there would be plenty of good mainland candidates and some bad ones, same as Filipinas, Indonesians and all the rest.

I need to clarify my statement.

My meaning is more along the lines of.....

If you could hire on a per hour basis/part time/non live in type of person to care for your household needs, would you choose that over a 2 year contract?

We would still go for full time live in. It works very well for us.

Not quite sure what the question is then as you are perfectly able to have a choice between a p/t live out and a full time live in now.

If the question is would we have a full time helper from the mainland, then probably the answer would be no. Why? Well mainly language for us, a high percentage would speak Mandarin only with varying levels of proficiency (if you're lucky). There will be pretty much zilch as far as English speaking and probably not far off that for Cantonese either. I think this DH from the mainland thing is not going to be a smooth sailing as it's being made out to be!

Quote from axptguy 38 "Our hiring criteria are always based on the person, not the nationality. If the DH is good for us, her nationality is irrelevant."

- agreed but all things being equal if I could hire a mandarin speaker I would, mainly to help with the language learning and exposire of our son who is going to a putonghua based school. As neither of his parents can speak it with any degree of proficiency and certainly can't help with the reading and writing this would be an enormous boon.

Also yes we would prefer live out non 2 year contract, would give us back some of our badly needed living space!

Well, Sarah99, all you're saying is the same as I. "Hiring criteria based on person". ;)

If the HK government decides to change the current laws to include mainland DH's working in HK, they would compete with the local DH who earn about $60 per hour. If we had to pay on a per hour basis for a DH who lived out, then the cost of care would likely be greater than the current minimum wage as set out by the government for foreign workers!

I think many expat families would keep the norm, but I think many local families would change b/c of cooking style and language would be so much easier.
