Hi, I have a young family 6,4, & 10 months and am looking for a helper. At the moment we are searching for permanant accomodation as we are in serviced apartments (Parkview). Could someone advise me the length of the process of getting a helper. Should I start looking now or should I wait till I have our own place (approx. 4 weeks). Any references would be great too. Thanks

Welcome to Hong Kong! I think you can start looking/interviewing candidates at this time. At least you will get an idea of what is available out there but I don't think the Immigration Department can start processing a helper's papers until you have a permanent accomodation as they will want to know what kind of accomodations you'll be providing the helper (size of room, amenities provided, etc).

I directly hired someone from the Philippines and the process took 6 weeks from submission of papers to the Immigration dept to approval of visa.

Allow 2 months so you don't get disappointed - and then be surprised when it is less.

If you find someone by word of mouth, or who's just finishing their contract it doesn't take very long at all. If you hire direct from the Philippines or through an agent it takes longer.

Check out ibanker 180's thread in this forum. His/her helper will be available soon and S/he speaks highly of her.
