Can someone advise me how/where to look for a good cantonese speaking helper? We've interviewed many many that say they are "fluent" but in fact they'd rate more as "mediocre"? Any thoughts?

If both 'less-than-fluent' and 'really-fluent' people are advertising themselves as 'fluent' then I think it's only the interview process that will tell them apart. I think you'll find people from both camps in whatever selection pool you dive into.

Maybe you should look for one that has around 3 years working experience in a chinese family here in HK and. And also, I think that'll have to be an Indonesian helper. Since their English speaking ability is not that good so they were usually trained to speak Cantonese at PT schools in Indonesia. You may try to contact Mary at 6283 7299. She might be able to help you. Her agency has domestic helpers from the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. Good Luck.

Try hiring a Thai helper. Thai people learn cantonese much easier, in my personal observation. As most cannot communicate in English, so they exert more effort in learning cantonese so they have means of communication with their employers.
