We have found a Helper we really like and her visa runs out on April the 6th. Her last family is moving back home. I don't know where to start we have only moved from our serviced apartment last week. Do I just call immigration and do they walk you through the process??? Or is there a comprehensive web site that explains the steps in order.

I don't want to use an agency as I would rather learn the process myself.

If you want to learn the whole process, get the forms from immigration department as these papers will tell you exactly what are required. Fill in the forms and you can start from there. Take your helper along as she should know where to go first, consulate, immigration etc etc. Have a nice time learning - it's quite tiring!

Can I down load the forms from the Hong Kong immigration site?? or do you have to go to immigration in person. The helper we like is still contracted to her employers until the 6th of April. Is it ok to ask if she can come with me or is that not the done thing while she is still working for some one else???

I can understand your confusion etc , I have found 2 lovely helpers who both want/need to leave quite abusive emplyees , which means they terminate the contract .I think they would have to return home and get another visa /wait 6 weeks to come back to work for us , does anyone know differently on this ,

thanks

Hi guyhar, if the helper you like has been in HK a while, she will know where to collect the papers, otherwise, go to Immigration tower and collect them, you cannot download them from their web sight, there are 4 identical forms you have to fill in, and they come with a 'sort of' guidebook. The forms are pretty straightforward to fill in. If your helper to be has completed contract with another employer, yes, she will probably have to go back to Phils(or where-ever), at the previous employers expense, she has to sort out new visa's etc, Then the new employer pays the air fare back here, helper also has to go to Phils consulate with the completed forms, and you will have to fill in yet more different forms for PHils con. she then gets a work permit, process can take about 6 weeks, then she will be legal to reside and work in your house, Good luck. If she is fairly experienced she will be able to do a lot of the form collecting etc, There are also various costs for paperwork which she will give you the bills for. There is another option, you could ring the agencies, and ask them to do the paperwork only for you, find out which is the most obliging and reasonably priced.

Hello,

When I hired a helper in July 2008, I wrote a letter to immigration to say that my baby was about to be born so could the helper start work for us immediately, instead of having to go back to the Philippines before returning to HK. I find that Immigration is very kind towards employers and usually grants their requests. Our helper was given a HK work visa immediately and didn't have to return home.

You should read the Immigration Department website - that Greenvalleys posted. Lots of information there, plus a phone number that you can call and talk to someone in the department. They're very helpful.

Thanks to everyone for all the help. As my prospective helper has only been here 6 months and her agency sorted all the papers for her last employment contract she is not really familiar with the process. It seems that an agency is the best way to go as 4G says I have found one that charges about $1008 HK does that sound ok?? But I will try and ask for her to expedite the process, thanks for that tip. I found out today that because the family she was working for had to go home the helper can stay if she chooses to. She can even stay with us as long as she doesn't work until her visa is approved. Or she can stay in hostel or at the Catholic Centre. Has any one had a helper stay with them before the visa is processed???

Not bad either. Quite frankly the HK prices for this sort of placement are very low. When we got out nanny in the US we paid several thousand US dollars.

DH agency fees can vary quite a bit. Be careful if you select one of those agencies billing less than around HK$3000 as it usually means that they will bill the helper a lot more (sometimes upwards of $5000-$6000.) I've found that the "fair" agencies generally bill each party around HK$3000.

When we hired our current helper, we originally was going to go to this one agency who was going to bill us HK$2400 but then we found out that the helper would be billed over HK$5000! It made more sense to go to an agency that billed us around equal as the overall cost would be lower.

This is not purely altruistic either. Consider how - if you go with one of these so-called cheaper agencies, it means your DH will be coming to you with a much higher debt burden and this increases the risk of them getting into the hands of the loansharks - which could result in huge probs for your household.

Also IMHO the cheaper agencies are likely to have lower-quality DHs as the good ones will avoid going to these unfair agencies if they have the choice.

I was under the impression from this agency that our helper would not be charged a cent.. in fact as I understand it we pay for everything and it is all included in the fee of 1800hk. So thank you I will clarify the terms of the agreement with the agent.
