Chinese domestic helper prohibited

ORIGINAL POST

Can anyone give me advice about the pros and cons of employing a Chinese domestic helper, either from Hong Kong or the mainland. I would like to avoid some of the difficulties that appear to arise from employing a foreign domestic helper. I am an epatriate but probably know enough Cantonese to communicate with a non-English speaking Chinese lady rather than say a non-English speaking Indonesian.

Doesn't the HK Government allow work permits for mainland domestic helpers the way they do for Filipinas, Indonesians, Indians, Sri lankans etc.? Or is it some kind of racial discrimination regarding mainlanders?

Juicer - a colleague of mine has a live-in Chinese helper and she costs $12K+ a month - and usually older women.

juicer,

To live in, or not?

To live in or live out, it doesn't really matter but preferably the former. Age is irrelevant.

I was hoping to pay not more than $9K per month. At $12K plus for a mainland domestic helper then I can see why foreign domestic helpers are the choice of the majority.

Local (HK) helpers cost HK$60-HK$70 per hour. Most of them are recent (5-10 years ago) immigrants from the mainland who have the unconditional right to work in HK (no visa hassle). The Labour Department has a hotline and tries to find one to match your needs; but there is a shortage in some districts at present. Tel 2503 3377 and ask about local domestic helpers.

Supply is better in areas with a lot of public housing/ where these ladies can afford to live (eg Kennedy Town or Chai Wan) than in Repulse Bay or Stanley.

I checked with Immigration today who said no mainlanders, no Taiwanese and no North Koreans. You have to employ locally or be forced to hire an "acceptable" foreign DH, Filippina, Indonesian etc..

We tried for a while and found the benefits did not outweigh the costs. Higher Salary, less reliability (sick days, late days etc.), poorer communication (often she was gone when we got home and we left for work just when she was starting so had little time to manage her).

I tried to find a DH through the labor dept. After waiting for almost a month, they finally contacted me and said someone was interested. So I scheduled a time for her to come in for an inerview. She never even showed up. some work ethics. I'm hiring a foreign DH now.
