Hello,
I am new to this forum and really do not know where to put this subject,so I apologize if I offend anyone.
I am an American male living in New Jersey. My fiance is a Filipina domestic worker in Hong Kong. Unfortunately she is on salary and her employers make her work 16-18 hours a day(10:00Am-2:00AM or longer). She has some Sundays off, but not all. She is grossly underpaid and they work her literally like a slave. My fiance is 35 years old and has 4 children,so she really needs to work.
The long hours and lack of sleep have really started to take a toll on her health. I told her to look for another job, but since her employers give her almost NO time off she cannot even do that,
What I am really asking is if any American out there is looking for short-term (6 months-1 year ) domestic or nanny help. My fiance is fluent in English, taught school in the Philippines and is an honest and good worker. She will not even take monetary help from me as we are not yet married. She is probably the most kind hearted person ever.
If there is anyone out there who is truly searching for a reliable, honest short-term worker please respond to this. I can also give you my information in the U.S. (job, telephone # ect)if needed for a refference.
Thank you to all,
have a great day.

Agree with TC - many maids are exploited - whilst there are no 'set hours' for the day, hers do seem very long. However not having a day off a week is illegal though as per TC comment, maids do not complain to the Larour Department for fear of getting fired etc.
On wages - HK$3270/m is a government set minimum rate so perfectly legal, though yes perhaps in principle low. Many employers voluntarily pay more than that.

If she is your fiance, why dont you have her come and live with you? Surely, you have already started the immigration process for her if so, then she would be allowed to live with you in the states? no? If not, why dont you just marry her and take her out of this situation? Wouldnt that be better than this situation she is in?

She had applied for a divorce recently in Hong Kong because divorce is illegal in the Philippines. She will not allow me to help her pay for it as she is very proud but at times foolish I feel. The divorce cost over $1,000 U.S. dollars and she is slowly paying for it. We cannot apply for her to come to the U.S. till after the divorce is final. Her husband abandoned their family and noone knows his whereabouts.

mymy,
I did not get your email. My email address is a bit confusing. richh732@yahoo.com. The "richh" part can be confusing as there are 2 hh's:)

It is not that easy to bring a person into the US. In addition, depending on the country you are from also affects how US immigration views the case. The fact that she has children will also factor in, and his income also.
The easiest way around it.. and to beat the system.. is for me to email you camden, before Ed deletes my post.

I know how you feel. A friend of mine has a domestic helper who works for her for 12 hours at least and she is viewed by her employer as super slow and dumb thats why she takes sooo long to finish her work. Some employers are never satisfied and grateful for their employees work. Thats how things are here. If there is really trouble for her there are lots of places where she can go for legal advice. I did volunteer work at Helpers for Domestic Helpers they give excellent help and advice there. Its near St johns cathedral.
