We are looking for a DH.
Some people advise us to find Thai or Nepalese and not Filipino.
What do you think?
Any advise where can we start the search?
(we are expecting out first child in 2 months)
Thanks!

If you are employing someone from overseas, it takes around 2 - 3 months for themto get here from the day you sign them on. Don't delay the process any further as you don't want to have to train a new maid with a new baby to take care of. It is stressful enough being a new mother without the added complication of having a new maid who may or may not adapt to your family situation and vice-versa. Ideally, your maid should already be familiar with your household routine and the both of you have worked out a communication system that works before your baby arrives, otherwise things can get a wee bit chaotic. I didn't realise that such a tiny little bundle of joy could bring so much disruption to the lives of the people around it until I had my first child! Congratulations and good luck!!

Indonesians like going to disco...? I have an Indonesian helper and so as my family n friends and I never heard of that. I found them more obedient as servants and hardworking but not as 'clever' as Filipinos. They are weak at following food receipes as well, compared to Filipinos. It wld be difficult to find English speaking Thal helpers but comparatively easier to find English speaking Nepalese. I was told by one agent that he found Thai helpers are more laidback (lazy in a way) and not as industrious as Indonesians. Good Luck.

I'd like to step in here... there are over 100,000 Indonesian helpers in Hong Kong and to generalize with 'they like going to disco's' is absurd. If there were more than a few hundred helpers in discos on a Sunday I would be surprised.
If we extend the thinking on this it would be like saying 'all expat men hang around sleezy Wanchai discos' when in fact only a small minority do.
Also we have hundreds of helpers through the office each month and although I do not deal with them I can here the conversations our DH Manager has with them. Again you cannot generalize with them who is clever and not clever... the main difference is with respect to command of the English language which may make it appear that some helpers are more clever than others. There are some very bright Indonesians and Philippinos working as maids in Hong Kong (and some not bright ones) just as there are some very bright and not so bright expats from other countries here...
Let's think a bit before typing eh...

Thanks for the info. I do agree with Ed that we should not generalize. The next question, shell i go via agency or direct?

"and Indonesians like to go to disco at Sunday."
stop and think just how silly this comment is...

they must be there with all the fat married expats.

currently I have an indonesian maid, and she is very good, very clean and doing everything perfectly. She did whatever we want and never complaint. We lucky to find her, that really can help our family. And she is very polite, simple and just simply doing at her work. I recommend you to get the madi as I get my maid. You may call to 2895 2233, and ask them that you need trial at least 1 day to see if the maid really suitable for your family. Please try and good luck.

Looking for a thai helper! Any thoughts...?
Don't want a Muslim, Indonesian or Philipina...too many in HK. They always hang around and I see them not really taking care the kids....only galapadi galapadi the whole day and I want to make sure my kid does not learn some 3rd world language...

Then you'd best be prepared to try to sponsor a 'first world' employee with native-speaking English to tend to your precious offspring. Are you expecting Norland nanny standards on the wages helpers earn? Highly unlikely you will succeed in getting someone you can afford to meet your requirements. By the way, from the tone of your post I can't envisage helpers of any race or religion wanting to work for you either...

lol. those folks who end up with kids speaking with a philippino accent are just proving how little time they actually spend with their kids. sorry, not gonna be sympathetic here. accents and picking up tagalog are likely to come only from the kids associating their identity with that of the DH. best advice - take care of your own kids as much as you can, and leave the cleaning and domestic jobs to the helper which should give you more time for your kids.

Can't believe people with such racist views. Best guess is illiteracy... You should be happy your kids learn anything at all, be it a third world language, far better than what they will learn from you...

Maseratimartin, you absolute bell-end. I'd be more worried about your kids discovering that clearly your foremost personal "characteristic" is to do with a car, personally.
I hope that, somehow - clearly not through your auspices - your kid picks up a number of subcontinental languages, dabbles in various religious, and discovers that the bounds of thinking you exhibit are nothing more than stunted, arrogant ignorance that can do nothing but hold them back.
