Can anyone throw some lights on where to find a local Chinese helper? what hours they work? and what's the average salary? thanks.

You can call up the Labour Department. Average salary : HK$50-60 per hour depends on their experience. But I tried several of them before but didnt work. All of them who were sent to me are new immigrants from the mainland china and their hygenic mentality is something that I cant put up with. Have you looked up the notice board in any PNS shops near you?

If you want them on a regular basis you can also offer a monthly rate. Mighty is right. I've tried several while waiting for my Indonesian helper to arrive. They worked really slowly and did as little as they could get away with and were always watching the clock.

Thanks Mighty. I am just investigating the possibilities of hiring a HK resident full time. I heard it somewhere that a church organization trains the local helpers to carry out the domestic chores. Just can't remember where I heard that from.....PNS seems to have only the foreign DH. I will try to post an ad to see who comes up. Cheers.

I m just being curious. Do you mind telling us why you need a local helper? I did try the same thing before because I did not want a LIVE-IN one. But at the end, it was just too costly to hire someone locally so I dropped the idea.

In fact, I have been interviewing foreign DH for a couple weeks now and have no luck on that front. Just thought HK helper might be an option. Also, I like the idea of a live-out one. Maybe just to get a little bit of privacy back.

I had a local Chinese helper while I was waiting for my Indonesia helper. She is OK, slower than my Philipino helper (has more than 20 years working experience), but faster than my Indonesia helper (has 6 years work experince), clean and punctual. I like her because she speaks Putonghu and can cook northern dishes which I eat all the time when I grow up.
I think a local helper is a good substitute if you don't want a live-in helper. I have to take an Indonesia helper because my husband has gotten used to the life with a helper 24-hour on duty, just like many people here in HK.
My local helper only part time work, 4 hours a day (cleaning, washing, ironing, shopping, and cooking for 3 of us in a 1000 sq feet flat), $3500/mth. She was trained by the government. I found her through "Jia Wu Tong". She only speaks Putonghua and Cantonese.
I know Jia Wu Tong provides full-time helpers, price around $7000/mth. It sounds too much more expensive than the oversea helpers. However, if you think about the accommodations, tickets, and holidays for the oversea helpers, as well as the switch cost (you have to spend a lot if you dissmiss them), the local helpers are not that expensive.
It's just so convenient and free to hire them and dissmiss them. They sent me the helper the next day after I called them. I just needed to let her know 1 week before I terminated her work. Everything's for free.
Anyway, a good helper is always kind of a good luck, a local one or an oversea one.
Good luck!

Thanks Zhang Wei. We decided to look for a full time foreign DH in the end. ( Just as a back up to look after our 3 year old.) It might take a while to find a suitable one though... I will investigate if "Jia Wu Tong" can provide a temp. for us.
