I know this has been discussed, but I need to know the price of a one-way ticket HK-Manila to include it in our termination severance "package." So far, I've found 1,722 for a one way on Philippines Air or 1,365 for a Return flight on China Air. Are these about right?

Wow, that's quite expensive. I booked a ticket for my former DH for $1000 through a travel agency and the same price for my current helper through my DH agency. They both took Philipine Airlines. When you book your ticket, make sure to tell them it's for your DH. I believe the price is different and they may give her extra luggage capacity (I think 20kg instead of 10, but I'm not sure).

Thanks Shadow!
I was thinking it was pricey too. I think there are deals to be had when you get them last minute, and I'm sure she'd rather have cash, so maybe what I'll do is give her 1200 for ticket and travel expenses to Manila...does this seem fair?

Hello,
I've just terminated my helper and gave her 1600HKD for her flight back. It's maybe more than what we should have given her but we didn't want to be too mean with her...
She was in the Philippines just before Easter and the round trip was 1700HKD.
So I think that 1200HKD is a fair amount.

Old mac, you sound very bitter.
We're talking about terminating a helper who has been stealing small items and change from us, who has been making twice the minimum salary, etc. I'm just trying to figure out what the normal amount paid for a ONE WAY ticket is...that's all!
We will be giving her a good severance packet, pay for taxi, etc.....
If you can help with that, that's great, if not...

Just booked a ticket for my helper and it was $1125.00 thats including the taxes. She flys in May. She has to fly back home as her previous employer gave her a ticket (non-refundable) and not money so of course we need to fly her back.

Thanks for the info, Gabercro and Ladyfrog; that's what I needed to know! I think I'll give her a little more than 1200, maybe 1600, as Ladyfrog did.
Rossy, it's true that we could have dismissed her without pay, but I think that route is pretty complicated and we would rather give her money and have her go away quietly. Maybe I'm deluding myself, but I'm hoping that she will learn a lesson and be more honest with a stricter family. We definitely made the mistake of treating her as a family member/friend rather than an employee. Her former employer was quite happy with her, and never mentioned the problems we've had. But maybe it's just being in HK long enough to figure out how to play the system?
Anyway, I'm certainly not trying to be incendiary or cheat anyone as Old Mac suggests, nor have I ever been an Agency owner of any kind! I've never fired anyone in my life, as a matter of fact. We really would prefer to treat the helper as an Auntie-but not if it means she will take things without asking from our rooms and stay out all night on work nights.

P.S. Is it better to just buy a one way ticket, as Old Mac suggests? My understanding from talking to helpers is that they much prefer getting cash because they often get extensions, so she could leave for home 2 weeks from now or 6 weeks from now. Plus they are good at finding those really cheap fares on short notice (I saw some at Cheapflights.com for as low as 200 HK$!!) and then they can use the rest of the cash for other expenses.
Old Mac: You see, the reason I was planning to give her cash was that I thought she would PREFER CASH. Am I wrong? I would prefer cash, myself, in her shoes. Was I not clear?

Amyvalentine, you're right, they definitely prefer cash. It gives them more options as to when to fly and how much to spend on flight. My previous helpers had always chosen cash over a ticket.
Ignore old mac - he must be having a bad day, probably still couldn't find his moose head to cook??!

Amyvalentine-I have had a helper come to me who was given a ticket rather than the money and I can tell you it has been a bit of a pain because the ticket is non refundable so she has to go back home for a little while. But in saying that if your helper has taken/stolen from you then you dont want to line her pockets even more by giving her money so she can buy a really cheap flight and pocket the rest. Catch 22 situation.

Ok, cash it is! Honestly, the whole experience is so stressful that I just want to give her money and have it all go as smoothly as possible. It has made me realize how those DH employer reference letters could be meaningless sometimes, since employers could omit the bad and just tell the good. I am torn about what to include/exclude in my letter to Immigration and if I write her a reference letter. Even though she has her faults, she still has good qualities, and we still feel bad for her. (My husband actually wanted to keep her on because he says stealing is universal in HK!)

Gabercro, I forgot to ask: any luck finding a new tire/tyre? The mechanic came and took ours away today, but I haven't received the estimate for the new tire yet. Do you know if you need a new tire or just a repair? I know that mechanics always recommend replacing at least 2 tires at once, if not all of them.
Please support our advertisers:
with regard to replacing tires, I've never had problems replacing only one tire at a time, but I think it really depends on how worn the treads are

No havent found one yet but left you an amusing response. Funny story I have just worked out what BTW stood for. OOOOHHHH my they say that mums loose brain cells with every baby they have had GEEEEEEZZZZ I have had three little treasures (monsters). Shivers I think I need COFFEE.
Oh yeah good luck with the helper. I agree with you, you cant have a helper taking/stealing from you no matter how small it is.

The immigration require you to give the helper a TICKET.My agency charge me HK$960 plus HK$ 235 it's a special fare on cathay pacific for helper, you need to show the travel agency her employment contract.

Amy, I agree with Rossy. I decided to give mine a ticket to make it more official. I wanted to cover all my bases. I didn't want to hear any complaints that the money wasn't enough, etc. or any other excuses. Especially if you don't trust your DH and she's stolen from you. Besides, you can buy an open ticket so that she can change the travel date. Good Luck

Shadow / Gabercro - can you let me know which travel agency helped book the ticket for you? I need to find a cheap return ticket for our DH because we also ended her contract on bad terms.
Amyvalentine - i went to cheapflights.com but it seems that the flights are only for departures from the U.S. Did I miss something at the site?

joy2 - was that cost for one-way or RT? The cheapest RT I can find right now departing end-July is $1880 on Philippine Airlines.
