My DH will have two months off during this summer because I will be away. What is the customary/rules for DH's salary during long term leave? Am I obligated to give her full salary for the two months she is on vacation? Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, I dont know the exact rules but the contract that you entered into with your DH states a monthly wage, regardless of whether you are around or not. I would imagine that by law and otherwise, you are obliged to pay her in full. Different perspective: would you accept half a month's pay if your employer closed over Xmas and New Year and didnt require you to be at work? All the best.

I used to work with employment agency in HK,my opinion is think that its between you and your DH,if she agree to have a vacation maybe buy her a round trip ticket that would be fine. You both need to talk about it and make a deal.Paying her 2 months salary on vacation i'm sure she's happy for that.

The law is that we are required to pay our helpers their normal salary for the 2 year contract. In fact, if you are going to be gone, you might need to leave extra money for food, if she does not already receive a food allowance. And in most cases, it is actually a good idea to have your helper taking care of your home during the time you are away; emptying dehumidifiers, keeping it clean and mold free, watering plants, etc.

It is true that you may be able to make a special deal with your helper, but in most cases, the helper (as any employee would be)is counting on the salary and often has financial obligations to her family. One helper I talked with wanted to quit her job because her family was requiring to take unpaid vacations when they went on holiday, and she just couldn't afford to do that. My belief is that if this family could afford to take holidays, they could afford to pay her while they were away.

sorry to ask - but how on earth is she meant to eat, save & economise while you are "away" for 2 months?

Do you think her cost of living is higher when you are in town?
