Hello,
We are considering hiring a full time domestic helper. As we have never hired one, have some questions:
1. what is average salary. (no kids, no pets)
2. can a contract be for only one year?
3. what are the main questions we should ask the dh when interviewing her?
thanks so much.

good luck for that....well you know tha average salary is 3270HK$, for filipinos, i dont know about the indonesians, bec I have heared that they have lower salary than filipinos.
The contract is normally 2 years.
Questions are up to you...but if you are hiring from here in Hong Kong then you have to ask why she leaved her previous employer etc..etc..release paper...and call the previous employer.

1. The minimum wage is 3270 (plus the 400 levy) We were just considering changing helpers and gathered through interviews that that is pretty normal, though some people prefer to pay a higher base salary. In addition you need to provide housing and living costs (toiletries, and food) plus insurance and repatriation expense.
2. The standard (and only legal) contract ois a set 2 year contract. However it comes with a standard 1 month break clause so if you want out early you just have to give one months notice or payment in lieu.
3. We like to ask as many specific questions about our own work as possible to get a feel for if the helper will take care of things in a fashion suitable to us. Example we have a large dog who needs a strong minder or he takes advantage so we ask questions about what is the proper way to walk him. We also hold the interviews in our home (on our helpers day off) so that we can see what is meant.
Truth be told, in business I have hired hundreds of people in my life, sometimes for big corporations and sometimes for home business. It always comes down to your gut feel for the person, no matter their background or answers.
