New maid - what now?

What TC says is right.

I did the same with my DH too as she di not want to go immediately home after her previous contract.

If she starts working for you immediately, then please note that she will only get a 1 year employment visa..this is to ensure her employer has to send her home in the first year of the contract. When she returns immigration will stamp another year ( to complete the 2 year contract)

Also, as her last employer is responsible for her return ticket home, she can tell her employer to just give her the money & she can sign that she has received that money.

As she has gone through immigration before, she wont need much paperwork, but she has to get a release letter from her employer.

mrs. miggins - we just hired our maid whose contract will end in a week (not terminated, but finished). it is our understanding (and hers) that she does not have to go back because she is just about complete with her contract (again not terminated) and has applied for a new visa with us.

the process we followed...

she brought us originals (4) of the contract. we all signed them and she went to the philipine consulate and took care of things herself there. thereafter (a day or two later) we went with her to immigration. (we couldn't stay for the whole time as it was work hours, and that was fine.) they gave her a date for when her new visa will be ready. that date? 4 weeks from now. don't know if we can expedite that, will have to see.

the dh should know quite a bit about the process and can help....though perhaps not as much if she's newer to hk?

good luck.

Our new maid starts with us 1 September (assuming her visa is approved). She is going back to the Philippines for 2 weeks in between contracts. She said her current employer pays for her flight back home, and we have to pay for her one-way flight back to HK from the Philippines - is this the usual practice?

thanks

You need to pay for her fare back from the Philippines. It is usually a visa requirement for helpers to return to their country of origin at the end of a contract. You will need to pay for travel allowance up to $100.00. At the end of the contract you will also need to provide her with a one way ticket back to the Philippines. Shop around for a good price on a ticket. i just purchased one and the price varied any where from 1100.00 to 2100.00 so get a few quotes. Let me know if you have any other questions. Send me a private message.

thanks fairybell, my amah said it would cost HK$1500, but I have spoken to my agent and she said that was a high quote and she can get it for about HK$1200 - will wait to make sure the visa is approved before I pay for it though! Thanks for your help
