I am considering hiring a ldh through the Labour Dept retraining scheme and will be grateful if anyone who has used this service could give me a feedback.
OR where can I hire a legal part-timer.
OR any experiences with Nepali helpers? Do they adapt to western families easily.

Hi, I rang them to hire a part time maid. The process is that you send in your particulars to the Labour Dept (ie hours you need the helper, what short of chores) etc. You also need to tell them what sort of pay you want to give them. I used one through them but found her a bit slow. Unfortunately when it came time to asking her to leave, she told me that I had to pay her one week notice @$55 per hour and so I ended up paying this over HK$1000. Under the law, you both have to agree what sort of period of notice is required (I suggest you agree in advance to save the hassle I went through!)Also, the pay is roughly HK$3,500 - $4,000 for 5 hours a day M-F. You can interview them and also try them out.
Good luck!

Interested Party - you said you found her a bit slow. I tell you what- though part time workers are like that! I had no luck with them. Before I employed a full time helper, I used several. They dont clean like a pro and they are SO slow. May be that's why they want hourly wages. Most of them are new immigrants from China. They have a different hygiene standard and if you are very lucky to find some one who can speak English. Sorry to say they really put me off, though I want to support our local industry.

Thanks Interested Party and Mighty. I want to support the local industry as well but may have to rethink my priorities. Do you know anything of Nepali DHs. I am basically looking for someone with common sense and honest w/o being on the phone the whole time.

As far as I noticed , filipino maids are those who are always on the phone. Avoid them and you should be OK.
