We planned on taking our helper to Australia for our end of year holiday and someone told me that she has to be working for us for 12 months before we can. I don't see any mention of it on the Australian Consulate website. Does anyone know if that is correct? Thanks

Its not correct.
you will have no problem getting her visa as long as she stay there up to one month.you will have to attach the employment contract and sign an obligation that she will not work there.The only limitation is that she can only be granted 2 visas during one year.We plan on doing the same and take her with us to Sydne and Melbourne , any ideas about sutiable accommodation hotels that offer something other then booking 2 rooms?we do want our privacy.

thanks amenda, thats great news. We are just renting a 2 bedroom serviced apartment. They don't seem to cost that much more than a regular hotel (not cheap though) and you get your privacy aswell as being able to eat in if you feel like it

thanks nes. it sounds like a good idea - can you recommend a good loacated serviced apartment in Sydne and Melbourne? btw - just got our DH visa it took 4 days.

Where in Sydney do you need to be? Most of my friends and relatives are on the north shore so we are going to stay in Chatswood, but this area may be no good to you, especially if you want to do stuff in town.

We're also planning to take our helper to Oz. I've got the forms and can see the undertaking we give is that she will not work while in Oz. But on the visa application form it asks what the purpose of her visit is - what do you put there? If she puts "holiday" that is obviously a lie because it is clear she is your helper from the undertaking you sign. If you put "childcare" or similar, doesn't that imply she is working? I'm confused! If anyone has completed the forms before please let me know how you dealt with this.

Just took our helper and put "holiday" on the application.
In regard to accomodation in Melbourne we always stay at Manor House Apartments (South Yarra), they are lovely and clean and some have fabulous terraces. You can book with wotif.com for cheaper rates (last minute). OH, and ask to be away from the railway line, otherwise it's really noisy.
