Moving to US but cannot take helper

We are moving to the US shortly and cannot take our DH with us although we would have loved to. She is very concerned about how to deal with HK immigration since this will be her second "release" within the last couple of years (last one was due to financial issues, and we are moving).

It does not seem fair that she will be penalized for a change in our circumstances, particularly since she has been absolutely fabulous and we would not have had any reason to release her other than because of our upcoming relocation. Is there any way we can intervene on her behalf with HK immigration? She is really phenomenal (compared to almost all of the candidates we interviewed and after reading some of the horror stories on this forum, she is an angel!) and it would be a shame if she cannot find a new employer just because of some technicality with the immigration authorities.

Any suggestions on how we can help her out would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest you get ahold of me ASAP as I need someone! E-mail my account. I tried to e-mail you directly but the e-mail find by alphabetical address was not working. Thanks!

Don't see why there would be a problem with Immigration if you are leaving for valid reasons. If you want the best for your helper, then you can find her a new job (like you are doing now). Based on your post, that sounds like the least you can do. Good luck to your helper. Also, did you actually check if you could bring your helper back to the States? or is that just not an option?

Funny that you should write! I was looking at some old threads today and saw a great post from you directed at someone who did not seem too keen on helping their DH find a new position. I was planning to write you to ask for some advice, but you found me first.

To answer your question, yes, we did look into whether or not she could accompany us. We did not have an issue with paying her US wages, etc. The issue was that US immigration has very specific conditions under which they approve a DH visa, one of which is that the employer will not be in the US indefinitely. My employer would have to certify that I will not be in the US longer than 4 years and that I will definitely move overseas following that - neither of which they could do in good conscience.

So, yes - we are incredibly focused on finding her a great position and will make sure that we do so before leaving. If you have any recommendations on what channels we can use to expedite that, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks John - appreciate the suggestions. We have already lined up some interviews for her with families that sound quite wonderful, so I am very optimistic that she will find an excellent position. We are leaving in a month so she has more than enough time to interview and we have already told her that she is free to arrange appointments anytime, including during the week. She is really disappointed that she cannot go with us to the US, but as I mentioned in my earlier post, there really was no way to satisfy the immigration requirements.

BTW - while I agree with you that there is an oversupply of helpers, I would contend that there is a severe shortage of ones as pleasant, hardworking and good as her! Trust me - we kissed a lot of frogs before we found her!

Sounds like you are actively helping her, so I trust things will work out. Yeah, no need to persuade me that there are quite a few frogs out there :) The good helpers are hired quickly. We almost lost ours to another family, because we waited a few extra hours to make the offer.
