Here are your answers:
1. Exactly the same rules and procedures. All domestic helpers, whatever their nationality, follow the same immigration and labour department regulations. You will need to have the contract authorised by the Sri Lankan consulate. This costs HK$120 approx. Then submit all relevant papers and contract to immigration.
2. Same rule as above. You follow the Hong Kong Labour Deparment regulations. The person may have paid the helper the remainder of her contract to be nice.
3. If you are paying for a ticket for her to go home on holiday, then you can get a special return for about HK$3,500. if you are buying the ticket for her to return to Sri Lanka at the end of the contract and are not renewing, it is approximately the same fare.
4. I don't think so. I have found that they are a bit more discreet than Filipinos, but otherwise not too different.
5. My last helper's english was good, but this one unfortunately has a big problem with comprehension. It's driving me nuts!
Hope the above helps.

My helper is Sri Lankan. The employment rules are the same.
She speaks and understands English, but doesn't read or write much either. For me that's not a problem.
I employed a Filipina helper for one year before, and I have to say that my new helper is a million times easier to work with. She is cheerful, has not once tried to take advantage in any way (unlike my first helper), she doesn't cry when I ask her to do something my way, she doesn't take 3 hours for a 30-minute shopping trip, she doesn't switch the TV on the second I leave the house, or spend hours on the phone while she's working. OR course I have only employed these 2 ladies and so cannot generalise about helpers' nationalities, but still, it's working out very well for us.
The air ticket is more than to Manila, true, but I don't think she will try and rip me off through that, unlike the first one.

Hi Mrs Miggins,
I too have had a PH & a S Lankan helper & I have to say, my SL DH was far better. I found my SL helper to be much more caring & dedicated. She truly gave her best to my daughter & my daughter adored her.
I find the SL helper not taking advantage at all & was much more respectful. I do have Phil DH now & she seems OK, but although reminded of everything many times, she yet tries to do things her way or do what she likes. In the end, it gets very frustrating to the employer & eventually I am getting irritated after continous reminders & corrections.
All I want is someone who cares & does what I would like in my home. If she follows that, I will be happy.
I wish you all the best :)

Mrs Miggins...where did you get your SL helper from? Was it an agency in HK or did you hire her direct from SL?
Please support our advertisers:
We found our helper by calling all the Sri Lankan ladies listed on this website. Mind you, out of the 20-something we called only 3 were looking for full-time live-in.
