Hi all. What is the requirement regarding medicals for the helper? Ours turned up without one and she assured us that she would have one in the PP's before she arrived. She was previously employed here and went back to the PP's as she was not allowed to remain here. Thanks.

Wouldn't you want your new helper to go to a clinic that sends the medical results directly to you? I would wait for her to come to Hong Kong to have the medical at a clinic chosen by you (obviously, you pay for the cost).

We too request our DH always do a medical before they join us. We tell them what we want tested...BP, blood tests, AIDS, pregnancy etc. We pay for all the tests done.
That ensures that the DH wont just do the easy, cheap tests. That is our final test before we start processing their papers.

Thanks for your replies, however the question was "What is the requirement regarding medicals?" ie: do they have to have one, is it discretionary or a condition of employment?

discretionary
it would be foolish not to require one though

Discretionary.
I arranged a test for my helper before she started - I wanted to check for TB principally(there's a lot of it here and it's quite contagious for people you live closely with), and I just arranged the minimum check-up package that included the chest x-ray. I did not ask my helper to have an HIV test as I find that an outrageous invasion of privacy. When I started work in HK my employer insisted I have a medical. This did not include an HIV test - why should it? I expect my helper to maintain good standards of hygiene at work. I (or the rest of my family) do not plan to be carrying out any 'high-risk' behaviour with her, why should I insist on her having a test that has no bearing on her employment with me? I wouldn't ask a friend or family member to have this test if they were looking after my child.
But then again, I have read a lot of cases of men having less-than-professional relationships with thier helpers, so maybe that's the reason people get HIV test for the maid...

wendy, your helper should have undergone a medical check up before she flies back here in HK, thats one of the requirements at the POEA before they issue her an OEC, she thats in the airport before she enter the immigration control for her departure, she should have a copy of it. And also you have the right to bring her for medical again here in HK i think will cost you around 500HK$, there is a clinic at wanchai where DH goes for medical.
