Hi,


I have had a domestic helper since October and it has been a long learning process for me and the family with many different problems


My helper has the "moods" whenever something isn't exactly as she wants it (eks: the food, looking after the children in the evening the ironing etc). To night she was unhappy with the dinner (she eats our food) and when I very kindly told her "please don't complain we are actually getting something you requested" she told me "you really piss me off". My children were at the table so i couldn't go into the discussion


She left later for her day off not saying goodbey or say she was sorry.


I'm at the firing point. I never speak to her in this tone and really do not think I should take it from her... am I being too sensitive?

You have to ask about this? I would have sacked her on the spot. Sounds as tho she actually wants this to happen. No one in their right mind in any kind of employment would say this to their boss. Man...and in front of your kids too. I am at a loss as to why you are thinking about this. Get on the phone NOW and give her a "dont come Monday" phone call.

Thank you all for your responses. And of course you are right she has to go - the sooner the better. My husband is away and will be back early next week. I'm not up to do it without him. I think I lost so much self confidence in this half year in HK. It's really terrible.


And of course if any of you out there can recommend a helper... please let me know. I know it is a wild shot but anyway.

Hi hake. Yes, I understand that you would like the support of your husband to sack her. Very normal. I really believe that with the right helper in your home with things running really smoothly, you will be MUCH happier. HK is a strange place at times when you compare it to home and I think we all suffer from a lack of confidence at times. I am certainly not quite myself here. Hang in there. Off to visit family for a couple of weeks but I will try to send you a PM msg tonight if my day isnt too frantic (always is the day before I leave!). You are not alone. Take good care and enjoy your Sunday.

Just cam e back from a Sunday out w. the kids and read your nice message...I really neede that thanks.


I'm certainly not looking forward to the next couple of days but I'll just put my focus on Wednesday when my husband is home and we can put an end to this.


and I hope I will get happier here...there is lot'as of room for improvement :-)

Your maid insulted you in front of your kids!? That is absolutely unacceptable. No reasonable employee would speak to their employers like your maid. If I were you I would have get rid of her immediately!



There are many employment agencies around with immediately available maid. Just do a search on the internet. Good luck!

Hi Hake, I never had a decent helper and being a working mother with my own business, I do go crazy too like you. If you don't want to put up with her anymore then let her go now otherwise if you feel she's doing it so that you'll terminate her immediately (i had one who did)I will give her warning letters then fire her w/o compensation. There are 4 rules where they may be terminated w/o notice or compensation. Employers are usually at the losing end coz they're well protected by labor laws and they take it for granted and some can be abusive of the laws too (we pay for them to come work and say after 1 week, she decides she doesn't want the job, we have to pay her 1 month notice and her way home!, that's easily $10k!). Helpers are helpers if they can't help, they go. Good luck with your helper search, if you come acrosss an extra potentially good helper, pls. let me know. take care! Sarah

Hi everyone,


And thanks for all the friendly advice. Just an update: I did fire my helper last week and I'm happy with the decicsion. Now I'm looking for a new one. So if any of you out there know someone you would recommend (philipino or other country) please let me know.
