They will know the ropes much better than any employer.. so yes best to keep all papers and documentation - a helpers journal is something I used where all conversations were documented, moneys paid, holidays taken and kept in a secret location that shouldn't found on cleaning.

I think sometimes that the employer/ employee relationship with a DH can be more casual and it isn't until you are burnt that you realise your errors and how things should be set up. It may also be difficult for people to see the similarities between 'the job of a domestic helper" and a job where you leave home. It is a different situation for many people to have an employee and to think about the 'big stuff' like paperwork that they are responsible for. Not making excuses - just can see how it can happen.

I think the documentation should not be limited to just the schedule of taken/available vacation leaves. It would be in the interest of both parties to also document her days off, money borrowed, salary/bonuses received, etc. Also if you have to issue warning letters, make sure your helper signs receipt of said letter, and always keep a copy.

These will come in handy later on when the contract expires or when you terminate their services.

I can't attach here but if anyone needs it I have a very easy XL sheet that helps keep track of all these items and is used in part as the monthly pay receipt. This way both my helper and I know each month exactly what holidays and leave are outstanding and what the pay is related to.
