Our helper has been with us for a year and when she runs out of toothpaste, shampoo or soap, she'll ask us to buy it for her. Obviously this isn't a huge sum and I've had no problems buying it for her but I was wondering if it is something we are supposed to provide for them or they should be providing for themselves. We are getting our second helper soon and I guess I would like to get things a bit more clarified.

These are personal items that she should be buying herself.

We are not required to provide toiletries to DH. However, on top of toilet paper, I provide shampoo, conditioner and bath gel only as an extra benefit with certain restrictions. I buy these big 10-lbs. container of shampoo & conditioner commonly used by hair salon for $38/container. When you return the empty container for next purchase, you'll get a $5 rebate as well. There are many hair care product shops which sell these item (e.g. there is one almost immediately on the left hand side of Mitsukoshi Dept. Store in Causeway Bay). One container can probably last for 6 months so it won't be much cost to me. My helper appreciates it. For bath gel, the shop I mentioned above sells it too or you can buy other large bottles from the Cosmetic Shop Bonjour for much cheaper price as well. Altogether, it won't cost you more than $300 a year.
I would not buy these expensive LUX, Vidal Sassoon, Pantene, etc. If she doesn't want to use what I provide, she needs to buy them at her own expense which she should be anyway.
Calamari, perhaps you can try to buy these products instead if you want to save some money.

I would go with the giant container option, but if the helpers will be sharing a bathroom then they have to share the products (except toothpaste, I think...) - they come with a pump dispenser so it's perfectly hygenic.
With my helper I specified that our shopping money could be used for all her food, plus toilet paper and soap. That way we avoided any misunderstandings.

Calamari, I'm not sure which part of Hong Kong you live at. In case you live on Kowloon side, I know another shop in Tsuen Wan (within 5 min. from the MTR station) which sells these bulk shampoo, conditioner & bath gel too. There are other shops as well but I don't know their exact locations. Let me know if you need the address of the one in Tsuen Wan.
