Andy,

If you want to learn maths, you don't just need to find someone who can solve quadratic equations with their eyes closed. Rather, you need to find someone who knows how to TEACH maths. It takes years to learn how to teach.

Therefore, you need to find someone trained to teach Tagalog. Fortunately for you (but sadly for them) there are trained teachers working as maids in HK. The educated Filipinas in HK tend to know each other... for example, ask Filipina nurses on the shuttle bus to Matilda if they know any trained teachers here.

There are two other ways to learn: one is to speak nothing but Tagalog in your house (and ban each other from using the phone) for one hour each evening. The first few days will just be point and say - water, cup, knife, etc - but you accelerate quite fast.

The other way is to have kids. You will then learn at the same speed as them - Papa, utot ka?

PS. From my own experience of Filipinas, your wife will not be very happy about you seeing a female teacher alone. And she WILL find out.... every Filipina has an intelligence gathering network that MI6 can't even dream of!

Hi Andy,

I am a licensed filipino teacher(male) with four years of teaching experience back in my home country. I am here in Hong KOng working as a domestic helper. I know that by law I'm not allowed to have an extra job, but I am willing to share you the Filipino language, through friendship...just friendship, in my freetime.

My aunt has worked and married an Englishman in London so I know quite the situation you're in. Well, not that exactly though, because my aunt can communicate in english very well. And translates Filipino language to English as well.
