Our helper was also direct from the Philippines on the recommendation of her sister who was working here, she has been with us nearly 4 years now and has proven to be a very good and trustworthy helper.

To Bamboozle, only a few weeks, she seemed a bit quiet at first, mainly because she was nervous about using her English but that improved very quickly. She has 3 children of her own so was used to kids, once we showed her things she learnt very quickly. All the paperwork was done by her sister. But if you can't come over without ever been a domestic helper before then nobody would ever be able to come over. I know quite a few people who have hired direct from the Philippines and none of us has ever had a problem with the legal side of things.

yeah...you can hire one who has never been....but not legal..you have to have an experience letter i think ( actually not sure) but for it to be approved....i think they have to provide a letter..but most people just make one up

I would not hire anyone I have not met in person. Just because your friend is happy with her helper does not mean that you necessarily will be with the sister. I think it's hit or miss in this instance and in my opinion you may be better off just interviewing helpers who are already in Hong Kong and finishing up their existing contracts. It's probably an isolated instance - but someone I know once hired a "sister" of a "trustworthy" helper and the person who showed up turned out to be a disaster. If you do end up hiring this person please try to at least talk to her over the phone rather than just relying on word of mouth.
