I am about to take on a FDH for the first time. She is currently finishing up a contract with her existing employers - she's been here over 5 years and they no longer need her. Does she need to go back to the philipinnes once her contract finishes before she starts with me? I'd be grateful for any information.

You can request that she starts straight away, there is a section in the paper work where you must state your case. You will need to arrange for her to return within 12 months of employment with you.
Not sure if she need to have returned in the previous 12 months, might be an issue if she hasn't but I don't know that for sure.
