Maids & Motors

Can a maid be insured to drive my car? I have heard from some longtime residents here that maids can indeed drive you to and from work but little more than that. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me - after all they can get their driving license independently should they so choose. Is there an online resource for finding out about these things from the official authorities without eight weeks of red tape?

Just a warning that it's illegal for FDHs (although I acknowledge that you didn't specify an FDH as opposed to a local) to engage in driving duties. In fact it's expressly barred on their visa. However, if driving is seen as an integral part of their DOMESTIC DUTIES - e.g. driving kids to school or getting to the supermarket - then an application must be made to the Immigration Department for special permission. And even then driving the employer to work is still expressly banned.
