Can a letter make the hiring process quicker?

Hello,

I was just wondering if writting a letter saying how urgently the DH is needed would make the process faster. I've been told that it takes 4 to 6 weeks for the DH to be allowed to work even though she says it's 2 weeks. I just moved to HK with 3 little kids (less than 4 years) and a husband working 6 full days a week, is that enough or should I make up a story?

Thanks if someone has had a similar experience!

You will be given priority by the ID if you need to go out to work..sounds stupid - as if a fulltime mother of little ones doesn't need help in a hurry!!

It is definitely not 2 weeks unless you have extenuating circumstances...such as fulltime work and you need to leave your babes with a helper. So you may need to make up a story - I am not sure if they need you to supply information about your imminent employment.

We have supplied a letter explaining the need for a helper quickly and it does seem to have helped the process along.

Also If you are able to go down (with kids in tow) to drop off the papers it seems to help. We managed to get a helper in just over 2 weeks.

We managed it in just over two weeks - I wrote a letter with the original application saying that my existing helper had had to go home to attend to a sudden family crisis (true) and that as I have no family here I am having to rely on the goodwill of friends to babysit (slight exaggeration, but basically true). Then when the new helper got called in for an interview I sent another letter saying a) it was really really urgent and b) I really need a Sri Lankan helper and there aren't that many around so please please please... the visa was processed.

Thank all of you so much! A little bit of hope finally...Do I have to give the letter to the DH as she is the one who has to submit the application? She just finished a contract and doesn't need to go back to Filippines, her consulate said she could go to apply at the immigration next wednesday! Thanks a million again!

Prune,

I'm interested in your comment "She just finished a contract and doesn't need to go back...". I was under the impression that she DOES need to go back UNLESS her new employer can convince the ID of an urgent need in which event her returning will be deferred by 12 months. Her new visa will probably only be for 12 months in that case.

TC, you're right she is asking for a 12 months extention of visa as she went to the Filippines last may even though her contract was ending mid-july. I hope it will be approved.I will try to write a convincing letter with my poor english...and also maybe I should go with her to submit the application with my 3 little ones! Thanks again to everyone, now I'm ready to try anything to make it quicker!

I wish I had thought to write a letter, the application for our new helper was put into immigration in the last week of May and we still haven't heard anything. My old helper left 10 days ago and its tough. Not the housework particularly, its just that with a teenage wheelchair bound son I find it very hard to get out on my own with him and the other kids. I really miss having someone I can leave him with while I nip to the shop. We're all going a bit stir crazy from not going out much. My husband has started trying to phone immigration but it just keeps saying the message box is full. We'll see if we get any luck with the e-mail.

Well, we just had a letter from immigration that has taken them 7 weeks to send, asking for more info!! Looks like I'll spend nearly the whole summer indoors.

cd - I think it's still not too late to put in a letter. If they've asked for more info means at least they're through the process. Along with the info if you put in a letter you might just be asked to come and collect the visa in a few days time(rather than weeks). Try sending a fax.

Well, the DH went to the ID today and she has been given her interview appointment in 2 weeks to collect her visa. She said that the letter has definitely helped as the other applicants had appointments for end of august!! Thank you very much to all of you and cd, bw is right, join a letter and it will certainly speed up the process if the application is complete.

I finally managed to speak to someone at immigration yesterday lunchtime' Told them I was on my own with 5 kids, couldn't get out beacause my sons too heavy for me on my own etc, they phoned back in the afternoon to say the visa had been granted. The agency said it will be about 10 days, but they're going to try for less. So it definately helped to talk to someone. Will definately send a letter straight away next time. Now, I've only got a week or so left to finish decorating the helpers room.

ALWAYS deal direct with Immigration if you can - I've always found them very prompt & helpful with their replies, be it by email, phone or over the counter.

Yes, they responded very quickly when we explained that we had booked a flight for our new helper to go home for her children's birthdays.
