Terminate and let go?

For reasons too many to mention, we are going to terminate our helper. Have you been in this position before and did you keep her on for the month? How did it go? I am in two minds. Any advice or comments appreciated.

We terminated 2 before on the spot. Paid everything in lieu of 1 month notice. That saved all the worryings that you might think of.

It really depends on what your reasons are and how much you need a full-time helper, because unless you have someone lined up and ready to start immediately, you will be without full time help for possibly weeks or even months. If you think your helper could improve, it might be worth talking to her frankly and telling her that you've been considering terminating her. However, if your issues are honesty or integrity, that is another story.

Also, if you've never done this before, it is emotionally exhausting-even if your helper deserves to be dismissed. As Mighty mentioned, if you do not give one month's notice, you will need to pay her one month's salary, her one way ticket home to the Philippines plus travel expenses. There is also a short list of steps you must take with Immigration in terms of notifying them.

In my case, although I am relieved to have terminated our helper, I found the experience to be extremely stressful and we are still without full time help 3 weeks later!
