I gave my helper a nice card and some phone cards so she can call her family. Frankly I wish my employer would do the same for me instead of foisting some overpackaged toiletries on me year after year.

I usually give my helper a few hundred dollars at CNY, sort of like a year end bonus.

If she does not already have one, how about telephone, tv, dvd or stereo for her room?

I gave my helper $300 lai see at CNY. At Christmas I gave her a nice tin of M&S bicuits or something like that (which she sent home to her son). Basically I try and treat her like an employee - she's not family so I don't want to get her something personal that she might not like, but I don't want to get into the habit of giving her extra cash for gifts (bit lazy, I think), but something like phonecards that she would buy anyway sort of works the same way. Like those endless Boots gift vouchers I used to get from relatives when I was a child...

A phone card is a good idea, as it is something she will definitely use and appreciate.

Also gift certificates at P&S so she can buy whatever goodies she fancies

If she hasn't been to Ocean Park or Disneyland, why not a ticket for 2 persons so she can bring a friend, and throw in an extra day off too, sort of like a birthday leave..

we gv ours 500 dollars in the form of vouchers...mostly at bodyshop/bossini/giordano. cos i feel gving them cash they always send it home and never use on themselves. i hv done this and my helper saves the vouchers until the sales hit the stores and then she goes out and buys lots. and i get quite happy to see she has used it to treat herself. cos she comes home with this big bag and is like 'm'am look what i bought with yr bday present!' also since her day off is a sunday the nearest sunday after her bday i buy her a cake (maxims) and tell her to go celebrate with her friends!

How about tickets to a show, we brought our helper a ticket to a show, and one to the xmas pantomime, she loved them both.
