travel allowance on rest days

Should? Legally there's no requirement - other than a daily allowance for when travelling home at end of contract (something like that, although i don't think that's the gist of the question) - but I do know of some employers in DB who give their helpers an extra amount knowing that they travel to Wanchai every Sunday to attend their church. So to summarise, there's no obligation but there's nothing against it either.

i live in DB and i pay for my helper's ferry fare to central and back on her day off because it is a rather large sum of money for them ($27 each way).

Arguments both for and against. Each to his own.

foolsevery1, i didn't give her money. i gave her a card that allows 50 trips ( it's cheaper too to use the card compared to using cash ) on the DB ferry. she can't use the card for any other transport as it is only designated to DB ferry. also, i always count the trips that she made so that i will know when it is suppose to be running out.

I have friends who moved from mid-levels to Sai Kung and they pay for their helper's travel back to Central on a Sunday.

foolsevery1, i always take the card back from her when she came back because i use it sometime too. like i have said, i count every trip that we made so i will know if she is cheating me. no, she has never lost a card before and if she does, i will probably expect her to pay for her own future trips.

I live in Clearwater Bay and I don't pay a travel allowance. Nor would I if I lived in DB. The helper knew where we lived when they came for the interview and they knew the travel costs involved if they wanted to go into Central. Besides they don't have to go into central, they could spend their sundays on the beach which would be about $6 fare.
