We're new to Hong Kong. We're currently interviewing domestic helpers. We're going to have her live out, atleast to start.

What is correct amount of money to pay her monthly? WHat should we additionally add for lodging? We have three kids, live in a 4 bed apartment.

Any help appreciated -

One assumes that your live-out helper is allowed to do that legally (i.e. she has permanent resident status in HK). If she hasn't then you are both breaking the law and the risks associated with that just aren't worth it. If you're new to HK then you might not be aware of that. I'm sure someone else will come up with the advice on dollars.

The current amount per month for a foreign DH is $ 3400.00 HKD. She's entitled to her own 150 sq feet of personal space (her own room) with basic necessities provided to her like bed, bathroom, food...etc. You can read it in the guidelines from the immigration department regarding hiring DH and the contract.

Regarding the "illegal" live out thing, many people do it in HK b/c there is simply no room for the helper to sleep in the same flat, or some couples with no children choose to have privacy at night or weekends...... typically a boarding house costs $ 1000 HKD a month, plus you should pay her the transportation each day back and forth.... comes to about $ 1500-$ 1800 HKD more than a live in helper.

Again, when you hire are FOREIGN DH, she's supposed to live at the place of address that is written in the contract. BUT, thousands of employers and DH agree on the "live out " arrangement.

Does it say 150sq feet? I can't imagine many helpers in HK have a room that big...

No it doesn't say that in fact they do not even require their own room but may share a room with a child or elderly of same sex. I have put 60 sq ft on my contract (as that is the total helper room and bath space) and have no problem hiring FDH.

Feet...keep in mind that 150 square feet is a 10X15 area. As big as many apartment common areas in Hong Kong. When I used to do the seasonal resort circuit I bunked in an 8' X 10' room with another manager/senior cook each bunkhouse had about 50 such rooms and common toilet/bath facilities. Cruise ship staff have similar conditions. So a 60' area for shower and bath is not that crowded.
